Guidance, support the essence of leadership.
Did anyone else know it was National Boss’s Day today? Henry and I found this out last week, so felt the need to write about this occasion.
National Boss’s Day is an annual celebration recognising the leadership, support, and guidance of bosses and business owners in the workplace. It honours those who foster a positive work environment and motivate their teams. We’ve all worked in jobs with leaders who are difficult to work for- real tyrants (and some of you might still be!), so it's always in our minds to ensure our team are happy. Running ERA is both exhilarating and exhausting, in the best possible way. With our team of eleven, the commercial fit-out world doesn’t wait. Office spaces, retail rollouts, hospitality venues- they all need to be done yesterday! Our team thrives in that environment, but it’s on us to maintain momentum without burning anyone out. We plan carefully, but we’ve learned that adaptability is just as vital as precision.
Even the most successful people still feel that nasty imposter syndrome creep in, which is only natural - but then I remember the hard work that has gone into becoming ‘the boss’ and a sense of pride takes over. Growth is always on our radar, but we’re fiercely protective of what makes our consultancy special. We want to scale, yes, but not at the expense of the culture we’ve built. Every new hire, every new client, every decision we make- all of it matters.
Henry and I are proud to work with organisations of all shapes and sizes. We’ve created leadership behaviour frameworks for a diverse range of companies and have worked with some inspiring leaders (aka ‘bosses'). Leaders carry heavy loads. They oversee many employees and guide their careers, too. While their position holds them responsible for a department or their own business, their list of responsibilities is complex and varied, so Henry and I are aware of the stress involved.
So, perhaps National Boss’s Day isn’t just about receiving thanks and recognition from the team; maybe it’s a reminder that leadership is a role that needs acknowledgement, encouragement, and a little support along the way.
Thank you for reading, and happy National Boss Day to the leaders out there!
